Brown Sugar Love

Okay, so Roger and I are Chicken and Waffle connoisseurs. We even had Chicken and Waffles as a buffet choice at our wedding by Karen Bevels Custom Catering (she and her team were AMAZING).  I was first introduced by Grandma and Grandpa Hunter in LA at Pann’s (my fave in LA and the diner scene in Pulp Fiction was filmed there, so that adds a coolness factor).  Roscoe’s is good too, but Pann’s has a special place in my heart.

In Oakland though, Brown Sugar Kitchen takes the cake.  This gem has been written up in hundreds of publications including Oprah Magazine and Chef Tanya Holland, who learned to cook soul food growing up and then attended Formal Culinary School in Burgundy, France has created a fusion like no other!  The cornmeal waffles are light and airy, served with a light apple cider syrup that keep the waffles crisp and scrumptious.  The chicken has the perfect ratio of batter to meat and the Tarragon and Paprika give it a unique kick that I love.  We also tried the cheddar bacon biscuit and the beignets which are also to die for.  This place is a must try and I recommend getting there early.  We arrived around 9 and were seated within 10 minutes, but after that it got packed and it looked like a 40 min wait for a table for 2.  The wait is definitely a testament to this Oakland staple!

After brunch, we did a little style shoot on the side of the road.  It is still pretty cold so I went with an Allsaints sweater (similar), resin coated Citizens of humanity jeans, Free People booties and my fave dark purple Cyber lipstick by MAC.

Happy Saturday and I hope you all have a wonderful week 🙂
