Oakland Hidden Gem: Old Weang Ping

Ever since we moved to Oakland almost two years ago, this little Thai restaurant, Old Weang Ping, is our go-to for a delicious and affordable date night.  This gem is hidden in a little residential neighborhood on Macarthur, but if you read the 5 star yelp reviews or articles from East Bay Express and KQED (here and here), you will want to make the trip.  It feels like you are walking into a restaurant in Thailand in the 50’s with traditional decorations, twinkle lights, and Frank Sinatra playing in the background.  The owner pours thai iced tea upon sitting down, and lets us look at the menu.  It is truly traditional Thai country cooking, not like any other Thai I have tasted.  On this trip, we got our 4 favorites, Crab Cakes, Chicken Satay, Beef Pad Se Ew (this variation has Spaghetti-like noodles instead of the traditional thick noodles) and Pork Yellow Curry( which has mango, pineapple and potato, yummy!) and a side of sticky rice.   We also recommend the Barbarian Soup, Coconut Milk Soup, the Exotic Herb Salad, and the Spicy Basil Fried Rice.  The portions are generous, and you really feel like you are in a family-run restaurant. Roger and I will keep going here as long as we live in Oakland.

PS:

Its cash only, so be prepared 😉
